Our ‘MULINO’ dates back to the 1690s. It’s a former mill that once ground corn, wheat and chestnuts. It started out as an olive press. Farmers in the region would transport their produce in horse-drawn carts, across the bridge over the stream.

The mulino is in a lovely location, nestled at the foot of a picturesque country church in a village only 11 km south of Lucca, one of Tuscany's most charming cities. The garden is long and large (4500 m), flanked by a stream on one side, and facing west. It’s full of flowers and fruit trees such as figs and hazelnuts. Nearby there is a village shop that sells all the local agricultural produce, including the excellent local olive oil and wines from the region.

In the past three years, the Mulino has welcomed guests from all over Europe. The restoration inside took only one year to complete, in 2005. Where before there was very little – not even a bathroom – now the property has 5 double bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. All the materials used in the restoration, inside and out, were either reclaimed, antique or authentically traditional. This is in line with the local zoning – the region has been designated a “protected region of particular scenic value”.

The terracotta tiles throughout were reclaimed from an ancient villa to the north. The stone used to make the new staircase and landing was sourced locally. The Tuscan kitchen tiles were hand-made according to an ancient pattern. The fittings are traditional and of the highest quality, providing guests a balance of luxury and rusticity.

"Qui vitat molam, vitat farinam"  -    Erasmus

That’s the mulino motto. Basically it means no pain, no gain. No mill, no meal. With the pain of our painstaking restoration now behind us, we can now enjoy the rustic Italian life. So can you!
